Malawi Matters- http://www.malawimatters.org/ Malawi Matters is an organization in South Bend Indiana that sends people to Malawi to help train people to teacher others about AIDS transmission. They may be utilized as guest speakers in the classroom, be an options for travel, and host a number of events (such as a screening of the movie Girl Rising) to support their cause. La Casa- http://lacasainc.net/ La Casa began as an organization with the goal of providing safe and affordable housing for migrant workers, they have since expanded their services to include financial counseling and classes (in both English and Spanish) and help build and maintain homes for anyone of low income in Elkhart County. This is a great opportunity for students to volunteer their time to help someone in their own county who may be from another country. Goshen College’s Women’s World Music Choir- https://www.goshen.edu/academics/music/womens-world-music-choir/ The Goshen College Women’s World Music Choir performs spiritual music of many cultures particularly indigenous cultures. They try to highlight the roles of women in these cultures. They could be utilized a guest performers in our auditorium. I could also invite the conductor, Debra Brubaker, to speak about performing music from a variety of different cultures. Heifer International- http://www.heifer.org/ Heifer International was founded by Dan West from Middlebury, IN to help refugees from the Spanish Civil War. Heifer takes donations and buys needy farmers around the world livestock that allow for a sustainable living and a renewable resource depleting world hunger and poverty. Students can donate money to Heifer and learn about what they do. Two men, John Nunemaker and Walter Hochstedler, who worked for Mr. West when the program first started live in Goshen IN. Inviting Mr. Nunemaker or Mr. Hochstedler to come speak to my class about starting an organization could help the students understand that someone from a small town can do great things. Better World Books- http://www.betterworldbooks.com/ Better World Books is an organization that collects donated books and sells them at a discount. This program is based in Mishawaka and was started by students from the University of Notre Dame. They raised over $18 million for global literacy through their book sales. I encourage our students to donate their unwanted books and to buy books from this organization. I will also begin a collection in the back of my room.
